How to Calm Down

While the energy that you get with ADHD can be very beneficial if you learn to use it the right way (Sports, and focusing on an activity you love, or creating something new.) There are times when a burst of hyperactivity is in the wrong place, wrong time.  Sometimes when I am feeling really hyperactive I get crazy and just need to work on calming down. There are many activities out there that are calming.  Here are three that I like to use myself.

  1. Meditation, Meditation is a great way to calm down yourself or someone you care about. Meditating for what feels like 5 minutes can pass 50 minutes. Meditation relieves stress and hyperactivity. Research suggests that practicing meditation may reduce blood pressure, symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression, and insomnia.
  2. If you are too hyper to meditate try going on a run or doing some hard cardiovascular activity. I personally think running is great because in the middle of it you get a rush of Endorphins in your brain. They are a calming wave of your body’s hormones that helps with calmness and relaxation. In one study adaa.org researchers found that those who got regular vigorous cardiovascular exercise were 25 percent less likely to develop depression or an anxiety disorder over the next five years.
  3. Another thing you can do is a creative activity. Personally I like to play board games. I feel like board games allow me to put everything into the board game so I have no room left for hyperactivity or distraction. My favorites are huge board games that take a lot of time and effort. Board games like Catan and Twilight Imperium. This helps you calm down because it creates a kind of other world for you and instead of having your focus everywhere it puts it in one task, winning the board game. A study from Realnetworks Inc showed that board games help us to reduce stress, support mental balance and help with relaxation.

I hope this article helped you find some ways you can calm down. I love to use running and large board games as my personal techniques. I hope you realise some ways you yourself can use them. I love these tips and always use them. If there is anything I didn’t put down or forgot to mention let me know.
